A section of Tororo municipality councilors are demanding for explanation from Tororo municipal council Mayor John Opio on allegations that he connived with the Tororo market vendors to rob council of 17 million shillings from Young Jing construction meant for demolition of the old market.
Speaking at a press conference today at Tororo municipal council, the councilors say their cry comes after a mini council meeting called by the speaker yesterday to discuss the manner in which the mayor received 17.3 million on behalf of council.
Headed by Agururu B councilor Flavia Mpande and Andrew Omuye of Amagoro A, the councilors are pinning Opio for picking money with false pretence from the construction firm in the names of council.
The meeting called yesterday headed by the municipal speaker Gilbert Otim ended prematurely after they discovered that the deputy mayor Lillian Ajambo was recording the proceeding of the meeting which the councilors said was illegal.
The councilors grabbed the deputy mayors phone as exhibit and later took to police for further investigations of the recordings.
Last month during a council meeting, Flavia Mpande accused the deputy mayor of spying on other councilors for the mayor and sid the recording was proof of her spy works.
When contacted, Ajambo said she was badly assaulted by the councilors and has opened an assault case at Tororo central police.
Speaking to East FM, Tororo central police station OC station Susan Ikuuku confirmed registering the case adding that investigations are still on going.
Meanwhile Tororo municipality mayor John Opio said he involved all stakeholders before receiving 17.3 million shillings.
