A modern fish handling facility built by government in Nakasongola district two years ago has been left to waste away. The fish processing plant is found at Lwampanga landing site on Lake Kyoga.

Government injected Shillings 2.3 billion in the construction of fish handling facilities. The facilities include fish handling slabs, staff quarters and modern toilets. The Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Ministry also constructed an ice plant at Nakasongola district headquarters.

Both projects were handled by Spencon Services Limited with funding from African Development Bank. However, local leaders and fishermen, says two facilities have remained idle since they were handed over to the district in 2015 because of defects resulting from shoddy work.

Robert Mande, the LC 1 Chairman Lwampanga landing site says they were excited about the facilities, saying they will improve their work, but this hasn’t happened. He says that the generator that was meant to pump water from the Lake breakdown a few months after the facility was handed over to the district by the contractor.

On Monday, the fishermen petitioned the Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Minister, Vincent Ssempijja through the Lwampanga Sub County LC III chairperson Laban Ssemakula to investigate those behind the shoddy work.
